For the Tasmanian Confederation

DATE AND PLACE OF HEARING:

18 August 1988             Hobart

This application by the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (the SDA) seeks to vary the Retail Trades award by introducing new provisions to enable the employment of traineeship sales assistants.

In fact the award variation sought represents the final step in the ratification of an agreement reached by the parties concerned, and the agreement is registered under the provisions of the Commercial Training Act 1985. And the definition of "traineeship" means a system under the Australian Traineeship System comprising structured on-the-job training with an employer together with off-the-job training in a Technical and Further Education College or other training provided approved by the Training Authority of Tasmania.

Since this is a consent matter which has considerable merit in that it will enable the skill base in the industry to be increased, create valuable additional employment opportunities, and at the same time properly accommodate industrial relations considerations, I have no hesitation in approving the application in the terms sought. This is particularly so because public interest and Wage Fixation Principles are not offended.

Operative date is from 18 August 1988. Order attached.

A Robinson
