Award variation - Career Start Traineeships REASONS FOR DECISION This application by the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees Association sought variation of the Retail Trades Award to include a new clause to cater for Career Start Traineeships for Sales Assistants or Clerks. Mr Noonan, representing the applicant, informed the Commission on 7 July 1993 that the application was in accordance with the Commonwealth standards for Career Start Traineeships, and was similar to other applications throughout Australia affecting various State awards. He said that the document he presented represented an agreed position with the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI). The TCCI, through Mr Edwards, confirmed its agreement with the proposed new clause. Mr McDougall, representing the Tasmanian Chamber of Retailers, agreed with the general thrust of the application, but expressed some concern in relation to certain of the proposed provisions. The hearing was adjourned to enable the parties to consult further. The hearing reconvened on 21 July, and after further debate in relation to the proposed variation, the Commission was informed that a mutually agreeable position had been reached and an amended document was tendered for the Commission's approval. The parties sought an operative date of 21 July 1993. The proposed new clause with its safeguards, both for existing employees, trainees and employers, will assist in providing new avenues of employment opportunity in the retail area. Accordingly, the award will be varied in accordance with the agreed draft. The order is attached, operative from the first full pay period commencing on or after 21 July 1993.
