Award variation - insertion of provisions for Career Start Traineeships - consent matter - application granted - awards varied - operative ffpp 12 May 1994

REASONS FOR DECISION

This application was lodged by The AWU-FIME Amalgamated Union, Tasmania Branch for the purpose of varying the abovementioned awards to provide for terms and conditions of employment, including rates of pay, for persons engaged under the Career Start Traineeship System and make minor amendments to the existing provisions relating to the Australian Traineeship System.

The Career Start Trainee System provides vocational training consistent with the needs of the industry and general skills appropriate to the workforce, and to enhance the skill levels and future employment prospects of Career Start Trainees. This is achieved through various vocational education and training pathways, including a combination of work, education and structured training.

The amended provision relating to the Australian Traineeship System only seeks to clarify the method for calculating wages.

All parties to the awards supported the application and requested the Commission to insert in the nominated awards the amendments outlined in Exhibit C4.

The Commission endorses the application as it is not contrary to the Wage Fixing Principles nor the Public Interest requirements of the Act.

The awards will be amended in the terms agreed to by the parties and as outlined in Exhibit C4. They will be operative from the first full pay period to commence on or after 12 May 1994.

The Orders giving effect to this decision will be drawn by the members of the Commission, who have within their assignment, the respective award that were the subject of this hearing.
