TASMANIAN INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION

Industrial Relations Act 1984
s.23 application for award or variation of award

Minister for Public Sector Management
(T.5501 of 1995)

TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE AWARD

COMMISSIONER R K GOZZI

HOBART, 8 June 1995

Award variation - Clause 27 - Uniforms - agreed matter - operative date 1 July 1995

REASONS FOR DECISION

In this matter the Minister for Public Sector Management (the Minister) made application for the variation of the Tasmanian Ambulance Service Award to provide for new uniform provisions to replace those currently contained in Clause 27 - Uniforms.

Mr Bone and Mr Taylor appearing for the Minister informed the Commission that the uniform issue was addressed consequential to the finding of the Fitzgerald review into the Ambulance Service. A review process was established involving management, union and employee representatives to determine the standard of uniform required. There were concerns that existing uniforms were not of suitable quality and fit, jackets were flammable and did not have reflective taping, the quality of wet weather gear was also called into question.

Against that background the parties agreed the Ambulance Service comprised four categories of employees with regard to uniform requirements. These categories were on road, clinical instructors, branch station officers/communications officers and supervisors. The proposed award variation reflected those groupings and allocation of items of uniforms.

Mr Nielsen appearing for the Health Services Union of Tasmania No 1 Branch supported the variation and reiterated that it was by consent. He informed the Commission that the review committee, which had been established some twelve months ago, had actively worked together to achieve the outcome contained in the documentation reflecting the uniforms to be issued.

Having regard to the submissions of the parties, Section 36 of the Act and the Wage Fixing Principles, the variation is endorsed operative from 1 July 1995.

The order will be issued in due course.
