RE: INSERTION OF AN APPRENTICESHIPS CLAUSE

COMMISSIONER R.K. GOZZI

HOBART, 1 October 1986

REASONS FOR DECISION

APPEARANCES:

For The Federated Furnishing
Trade Society of Australasia,
Tasmanian Branch

- Mr. J. Gill

For the Tasmanian Chamber
of Industries

- Mr T.J. Abey

DATE AND PLACE OF HEARING:

10 September 1986

Hobart

This is an application to vary the Furnishing Trades Award by the insertion of anew clause to identify certain proclaimed trades, whereby if juniors are employed in the work they can only be employed as apprentices.

Mr. Gill appearing for the Federated Furnishing Trade Society of Australasia, Tasmanian Branch and Mr. Abey appearing for the Tasmanian Chamber of Industries, prepared a consent draft clause for my consideration.

The proposed clause reflects the federal award prescription with the exception that it has been modified to make it relevant to Tasmania in the context of apprenticeship trades applicable in this State.

The proposed clause does no violence to the Wage Fixing Principles. I also consider it to be in the public interest to vary the award as requested, and I decide accordingly.

The order reflecting my decision is attached hereto.
