T.1660 of 1988 IN THE MATTER OF AN APPLICATION BY THE AUSTRALIASIAN SOCIETY OF ENGINEERS TO VARY THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRIES AWARD

RE: 4% SECOND TIER and 3% SUPERANNUATION

COMMISSIONER J.G. KING HOBART, 28 October 1988

REASONS FOR DECISION

APPEARANCES:

For the Australasian Society of
Engineers, Tasmanian Branch
- Mr. J. Forster

For the K-Mart - Mr. T. Edwards with
  Messrs. D. Brindle and
  J. Clements

DATE AND PLACE OF HEARING:

7 September 1988 Hobart (T.1529 of 1988)
29 September 1988 Hobart

As on 7 September, following brief opening submissions, the Commission chaired a conference in an effort to resolve the claims without the need for arbitration.

Upon resumption of formal proceedings, I was advised that agreement had been reached and Mr. Edwards (in some detail) outlined the consensus of the parties.

Mr Edwards also undertook to supply the Commission with an agreed draft order varying the Award and a copy of the work practice and other changes necessary to achieve the cost offsets required by the second tier principle.

The agreed work practice and conditions of employment changes are a combination of some of those determined by a Full Bench of this Commission in the Retail Trades Award1 and some from the Federal award regulating the Automotive Industry in this State.

A separate item going to changes in the current procedures for issuing clothing and consequent laundry arrangements, was also submitted as a significant cost offset for the employer.

The Commission's order will follow.
