T1083

IN THE TASMANIAN INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION

Industrial Relations Act 1984

T.1083 of 1987 IN THE MATTER OF AN APPLICATION BY THE TASMANIAN CONFEDERATION OF INDUSTRIES TO VARY THE CLOTHING MAKERS AWARD

  RE: TRAINEESHIPS

ACTING PRESIDENT HOBART, 2 February 1990

REASONS FOR DECISION

APPEARANCES:

For the Tasmanian Confederation
of Industries
- Mr G.J. Smith

For the Clothing and Allied Trades
Union of Australia, Victorian Branch
- Mr K. O'Brien

DATE AND PLACE OF HEARING:

3 October 1989             Hobart

The Tasmanian Confederation of Industries (TCI) applied to the Commission to vary the Clothing Makers Award by making provision for traineeships in accordance with the Australian Traineeship System (ATS).

The matter is one of consent and the proposed clauses set out the basis for the voluntary employment by employers bound by the award of trainees under the ATS.

The ATS comprises structured on-the-job training with an employer, together with off-the-job training by a training provider approved by the Training Authority of Tasmania. Trainees under the scheme-may be enrolled in appropriate ATS training courses through application to an employer bound by the award, or through selection by the employer concerned.

Provision for similar clauses in the awards of this Commission have now become well established, as the benefits to industry and employees alike are well understood and appreciated.

Since this is a consent matter, and neither public interest nor wage fixation principles would be offended, the application is granted.

OPERATIVE DATE

This variation shall have effect from the first pay period to commence on or after 3 October 1989.

Order will follow.
