MARINE BOARDS AWARD

DEPUTY PRESIDENT A ROBINSON

17 September 1991

State Wage Case - 2.5% adjustment to wage rates and allowances

REASONS FOR DECISION

These matters have been joined and each concerns applications to vary the Marine Boards Award by increasing wage rates and work related allowances by 2.5% in a manner consistent with the requirements of the revised Wage Fixation Principles.

The matter is one of consent and during the course of the hearing each and every aspect of Section 1 - Structural Efficiency Principle, items (a) to (g) inclusive were addressed. It was illustrated to the Commission's satisfaction that current award provisions already embrace appropriate clauses going to issues inclusive of, for example, arrangements of working hours; faciliative provisions and consultative mechanisms.

I agree with the general comment of Tasmanian Confederation of Industries that in many respects this award has been ahead of its time in relation to being very flexible and having sound structures to enhance efficiency, productivity and career opportunities for employees.

In all of these circumstances I conclude that the requirements of the Wage Fixation Principles have been met, and that it would be consistent with the requirements of Section 36 of the Act to approve the present applications.

All union parties expressed a commitment consistent with Principle 1, and subject only to the Commission's records verifying such commitment in writing, the award will be varied by applying a 2.5% increase to existing wage rates and work related allowances.

Operative Date

These variations shall have effect from the first full pay period to commence on or after 13 September 1991.

Order will follow.
