TASMANIAN INDUSTRIAL COMMISSION Industrial Relations Act 1984 Tasmanian Confederation of Industries MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES (PRIVATE SECTOR) AWARD
Making of a new award - granted REASONS FOR DECISION Currently the Medical Practitioners (Private Sector) Award contains classifications for Radiographers, Medical Scientists and Laboratory Technical Assistants. As part of the award-restructuring programme for that award the Tasmanian Confederation of Industries and the Health Services Union of Australia, Tasmania No. 1 Branch, The Federated Clerks Union of Australia, Tasmanian Branch and the Australian Nursing Federation, Tasmanian Branch agreed that a new award should be established to be known as the Medical Diagnostic Services (Private Sector) Award. This would eventually see those previously mentioned classifications removed from the Medical Practitioners (Private Sector) Award. This application, lodged by the Tasmanian Confederation of Industries seeks to establish that new award in respect of the industry of pathology services and radiology services. The parties emphasised the need for this industry to have its own award which was more industry specific and relevant to its needs. The Health Services Union of Australia Tasmania No. 1 Branch also foreshadowed that they may, at some stage in the near future, make application to extend the award to cater for other health professionals who are required to undertake diagnostic procedures outside a private hospital. I am satisfied there is a need for a new award to be known as the Medical Diagnostic Services (Private Sector) Award and I hereby endorse and approve the agreed position of the parties. Having decided to establish this new award, it would now be open to any registered organisation to seek an interest in the award in accordance with the provisions of the Industrial Relations Act 1984. As the making of this award is not yet completed and submissions still have to be presented in respect to wage rates and conditions of employment, employers falling within the scope of this award should continue to observe the wage rates and conditions of employment contained in the Medical Practitioners (Private Sector) Award. The order giving effect to this decision is attached and shall be operative from 4 November 1991.
