FURNISHING TRADES AWARD

COMMISSION R J WATLING

23 January 1992

Wage rates - State Wage Case November 1989 - First Minimum rates adjustment

REASONS FOR FURTHER DECISION

In my decision dated 4 December 1991 it was stated:

"The agreed programme for finalising of the Structural Efficiency Principle and the minimum rates adjustments is as follows:

    (1) The broadbanding of approximately 59 classifications into 7 grades.

    (2) Commence the first minimum rates adjustment at the beginning of 1992.

    (3) Finalise the structure for c Jerks and carter/drivers.

    (4) Establish a new award for glass merchants.

    (5) Remove Division 8 - Glass from the Furnishing Trades Award."

I went on to say that, as a first step to finalising the minimum rates adjustments, I accepted the broadbanding of classifications in Division A of the Furnishing Trades Award as presented by the parties.

This further decision is in respect to a claim for the first minimum rates adjustment to be included in the Furnishing Trades Award in accordance with the previously mentioned programme and the Wage Fixing Principles.

As a result the parties agreed to the following classifications being increased in the manner set out below:

    Grade          Amount
                          $

    Grade 1          Nil
    Grade 2          5.10
    Grade 3        10.70
    Grade 4        14.90
    Grade 5 (a)   16.10
    Grade 5 (b)   21.50
    Grade 6        17.80
    Grade 7        18.00

It was also agreed that those amounts be absorbed against any overaward payments being paid by the employer as from the beginning of the first full pay period on or after 23 January 1992.

Having considered the submissions of the parties I am of the view that the application conforms with the wage fixing principles and the public interest requirements of the Act and therefore the award will be varied in the manner sought by the parties from the agreed operative date of the first full pay period on or after 23 January 1992.

The order giving effect to this decision is attached and the parties are reminded that the next minimum rates adjustment will not be automatic and a separate application will have to be lodged with the Commission.
