HAIRDRESSERS AWARD

PRESIDENT F. D. WESTWOOD

16 MARCH 1994

Wage rates - State Wage Case December 1993 - arbitrated safety net adjustment

REASONS FOR DECISON

This application for wage rates to be increased in accordance with the Arbitrated Safety Net Adjustment Principle was lodged by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, Tasmanian Branch.

Mr Griffin tendered a draft order which showed an amount of $8 per week as a supplementary payment set out in a separate column to be added to existing wage rates, and a provision indicating that the increase was capable of being absorbed against any over award payment currently being paid.

Variations to Apprentice and Junior Worker rates were effected on a proportionate basis, together with the necessary proviso regarding absorption against existing over award payments. Mr Griffin informed the Commission that the parties to the award were engaged in a substantial review of the award and he was hopeful that a restructuring package would be available to put to the Commission in a short time.

The proposed variations, subject to minor alteration and correction, were supported by the representative of the employers, Mr Edwards. An operative date of the first pay period to commence on or after the date of the Commission's decision was sought.

I consider the application meets the requirements of the Arbitrated Safety Net Adjustment Principle and accordingly the application is approved with effect from the first full pay period to commence on or after the date of this decision.

The appropriate order is attached.
