(T6578 of 1996)

SHIPBUILDERS AWARD

PRESIDENT F D WESTWOOD

HOBART, 11 November 1996

Award variation - Wage Rates clause - increase rate for minimum wage - order issued operative ffpp 11.11.96

REASONS FOR DECISION

This application was lodged by the Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing & Kindred Industries Union to vary the Wage Rates clause of the Shipbuilders Award by increasing the rate for the minimum wage.

Mr Baker, for the applicant, indicated that to give effect to two $8 safety net adjustments which had occurred in the Shipbuilders Award, it was proposed to delete the amount of $257.40 from subclause 3 - Minimum Wage of the Wage Rates clause and to insert in lieu $273.40. Mr Benson, for the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, Tasmanian Branch supported Mr Baker's submissions.

Ms Thomas of the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Limited said that the Chamber offered its consent to the application and agreed that the proposed variation was in accordance with the first and second safety net adjustments.

I am satisfied that this consent application will have no harmful impact on the factors the Commission must consider in the public interest and that it conforms with the Wage Fixing Principles. Accordingly the application is approved. The award will be varied in the manner sought with effect from the first full pay period to commence on or after 11 November 1996. The order is attached.
