Award variation - safety net adjustment - increase tool allowance - increase ship repairing allowance - op date ffpp 1 July 1998 REASONS FOR DECISION These applications were made by the Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing & Kindred Industries Union (the Union) pursuant to Section 23 of the Industrial Relations Act 1984 (the Act) and sought variations to the Metal and Engineering Industry Award (the Award). The applications, in accordance with the Safety Net Adjustment Principle outlined in the State Wage Case decision of 19971, sought to vary the Tool Allowance and the Ship Repairing Allowance specified in Section 7 - Allowances, of Clause 8 Wage Rates, of the Award. At the commencement of the hearing, at the request of the Union and the concurrence of the Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Limited (the Chamber) the matters before the Commission were adjourned and a private conference took place between the parties. When the hearing resumed the Commission was advised that, subject to the production of agreed draft orders, both applications had been settled. Agreed draft orders and an agreed date of operation have been submitted to the Commission by the parties. The Commission is satisfied that these applications are in accordance with the Principles of the Commission and their approval is not against the public interest. The applications are approved: an order, operative from the commencement of the first full pay period on or after 1 July 1998, is attached.
