NGT - SDA SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIP AGREEMENT 2003

DEPUTY PRESIDENT R J WATLING

HOBART, 20 October 2003

Industrial Agreement - agreement approved - operative 1 September 2003 - for a period of 24 months - forwarded to the Acting Registrar for registration

REASONS FOR DECISION

[1] This application, lodged pursuant to s.55 of the Industrial Relations Act 1984 by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, Tasmanian Branch (SDAEA) and NGT Tasmania Ltd (the employer), was for the purpose of filing an industrial agreement with the Commission.

[2] A hearing was convened at Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal Rooms, Second Floor, Cnr St Johns and Brisbane Street, Launceston, Tasmania 7250, before myself, on Friday, 17 October 2003 at 9.10 am.

[3] The agreement, to be known as the NGT - SDA School Based Traineeship Agreement 2003, is to be operative on and from 1 September 2003 and will remain in force for a period of 24 months.

[4] The purpose of the agreement is:

"(a) the development of appropriate employment conditions for School Based Trainees, which are no less than the entitlements of a non-school based trainee undertaking a similar traineeship;

(b) provision of an opportunity for secondary school students to undertake paid on the job training in order to achieve the specified qualification;

(c) improvement in the prospects of ongoing employment for the trainee."

[5] Mr P Griffin for the SDAEA and Mr J Glisson for the employer, presented submissions in support of the consent application.

[6] Having considered the submission of the parties, I am satisfied the agreement should be approved as it is consistent with the public interest requirements of the Act, and I decide accordingly.

[7] The file will now be referred to the Acting Registrar in accordance with the requirements of s.56(1) of the Act.
