NGT - AMWU SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIP AGREEMENT 2003

DEPUTY PRESIDENT R J WATLING

HOBART, 21 November 2003

Industrial Agreement - agreement approved - operative 1 September 2003 - for a period of 24 months - forwarded to the Acting Registrar for registration

REASONS FOR DECISION

[1] This application, lodged pursuant to s.55 of the Industrial Relations Act 1984 by the Automotive, Food, Metals, Engineering, Printing & Kindred Industries Union (AFME&PKIU) and NGT Tasmania Limited the employer), was for the purpose of filing an industrial agreement with the Commission.

[2] A hearing was convened at the Commonwealth Law Courts, 39-41 Davey Street, Hobart, Tasmania, before myself, on Wednesday, 19 October 2003 at 9.30 am.

[3] The agreement, to be known as the NGT - AMWU School Based Traineeship Agreement 2003, is to be operative on and from 1 September 2003 and will remain in force for a period of 24 months.

[4] The purpose of the agreement is:

"(a) the development of appropriate employment conditions for School Based Trainees, which are no less than the entitlements of a non-school based trainee undertaking a similar traineeship;

(b) provision of an opportunity for secondary school students to undertake paid on the job training in order to achieve the specified qualification;

(c) improvement in the prospects of ongoing employment for the trainee."

[5] Mr J Glisson for the employer, presented submissions in support of the consent application. Mr P Baker, AFMEPKIU, by correspondence dated 19 November 2003, advised the Commission of his inability to attend the hearing and consented to registration of the Agreement.

[6] Having considered the submission of the parties, I am satisfied the agreement should be approved as it is consistent with the public interest requirements of the Act, and I decide accordingly.

[7] The file will now be referred to the Acting Registrar in accordance with the requirements of s.56(1) of the Act.
